The Most Wonderful Time of The Year - Decorating Ideas This Christmas

Battle stations everyone! The big man is gearing up his sleigh – and yes, don’t worry, he can still visit everyone’s homes. Santa socially distanced before it was cool. With less than a month to the big day, it’s time we all started (if you haven’t already) to turn our minds to decorating the house. At any other time of the year, unloading boxes upon boxes from the attic, thinking how to keep a tree alive (and the house warm), and fiddling with a set of lights to find out which one is causing the whole set not to work would feel like some sort of trial by ordeal. However, at Christmas, it manages to make itself feel magical. Below are some of our thoughts to help you plan and get in the festive spirit.

Keep it traditional

Nothing quite beats the reds, golds and greens of Christmas

Nothing quite beats the reds, golds and greens of Christmas

Whilst modern approaches can be beautiful, nothing quite beats the traditional red, green and gold colours of Christmas. Christmas is a time of nostalgia, tradition, magic and families. Be sure to carry this through when planning your decorations. The tree should be a family affair filled with reds and golds and handmade pieces from children (or adults!). We would caution against making the tree feel too cold with silver-blue lights and too much white – there’s plenty of ways to incorporate silvers and whites in installations in other parts of the house.

Fireplace Garlands

An increasingly popular trend ever since the return of the feature fireplace is how people decorate them at Christmas. There are wonderful examples of people building their own from scratch with fir gathered from the forest floor during a winter walk. However, if that feels a bit much, you can always cheat as there are bases you can buy from many garden centres. Adding to these yourself can be great fun and a nice hybrid between the two. Combined with scented candles from The White Company and you’ll be well on your way to your very own winter wonderland.

Wreaths

Wreaths are another arena where handmade products are happily coming to the fore once again. We’d highly recommend you make your own too. The components can be bought from any garden centre and the most work you’ll have to do is remember how to use a glue gun.  From berries to bows and sticks of cinnamon to faux orange slices, there truly are no limitations to what you can include. This is also the perfect place too for a more wintery scene if you would prefer to thread cool lights, and pine cones spray painted white. If you enjoy being crafty, or want to have the kids help out, this can be a brilliant outlet to get you started

Keep it fun

We’ve all had enough to stress about with 2020. Tesco said it right when they declared that nobody is on the naughty list this year. So don’t allow your decorations to become too stressful. Yes, Instagram (and blog posts like this) will be full of magnificent trees bursting with decorations and grottos that put us all to shame. You never see the process of these things coming together and I can guarantee everyone has a little strop trying to wrap their Christmas tree in lights. It’s part of the process. So throw on the Christmas music, pull on a Christmas jumper and, however you decorate, make sure it’s filled with pieces that reflect you and your family. That is, after all, exactly how the magic of Christmas is created.
